We've all heard it over and over again: "You have to dress in black to look slimmer," so much so that we all end up looking like grieving depressives, even during the summer. However, this misconception is false. We'll explain why!

The Truth About Black

It can indeed be said that black blurs shapes, as dark shades reflect little light and hide folds and curves. Thanks to optical illusions, black (unlike white) gives the impression of slimming. In theory, we could say that black slims, but when it comes to clothing, this isn't entirely true. Several criteria, such as cut, fabric, and even the harmony of the outfit, can influence our perception. Therefore, wearing black to appear slimmer isn't a guarantee of success.

Material as the Primary Criterion

Black slims, but with an equivalent cut and material, it isn't the number one criterion for a garment to slim the silhouette. The key criteria are the cut of the garment and the fabric. A light-colored dress made of lightweight but well-cut fabric will look better on you than a black dress made of heavy fabric.

Conclusion

Choose styles that flatter your figure and hug your curves. Clothing that is too loose or too tight can accentuate your curves. Opt for lightweight, flowing fabrics that hug your body without adding bulk.
